For Your Thoughts

Dear students and SPM candidates,

Your Part C in English SPM papers will have you reading a lengthy essay and it will be troublesome for you to understand and digest it if you have not been trained enough. For some students it might be easy but for others, it can be quite tricky. Therefore, here are some tips that I can share so that it is easier for you to do that particular part:

1. Make sure to read the passage thoroughly. Eventhough I have done a lot of readings, when it comes to answering questions on passages, I would have myself reading every bits of the passage to understand. Reread the passage if you have time for better understanding.

2. Understand what the question wants. There are some tricky questions that might fool you.

3. Usually in SPM paper, there are an indication on where you can find the answers. Use it!

4. Find keywords that might be the answer and make sure it is included in your answer. Write in full sentences!

5. Double-check your answers so that you will not provide the wrong answers, or the wrong use of grammar.

Answers

Have you answered the questions? If so, here are the answers:

For 'Preserving Nature':

1. The author said that many people take nature for granted and do not realize that they cannot just reap from it.

2. According to 'The Road', the world will come to a point where gray ash scattered around and all plant life is gone. Without plants the animal and human population dwindles down to almost nothing. The remaining individuals look depressed or insane and have to scavenge for food.

3. People can do recycling, planting, using eco-friendly products, being more conservative with products and bringing awareness to this horrid matter to assist in helping to save the nature.

4. The implications of people preserving nature are people can witness the beauty in Mother Nature. Clean air and fresh water will be major effects that everyone will love. Plants will blossom and grow into beautiful sights to behold. People will become happier with the spectacular views surrounding them. Food and other resources will be plentiful as long as it is replaced

5. Answer the question in your own words as there is no marking scheme for this type of question.

For 'A Walk in the Woods':

1. There is 'a natural path made by a small creek' in the middle of the woods because it was once a paintball arena.

2. Mark ask Thoran “Are you wearing any good shoes?” because it was about to get very muddy, very quickly because about two days ago it had rained and apparently, since the trees blocked the sun, the ground wasn’t able to evaporate the excess moisture. So in certain parts of the forest, there were huge mud spots.

3. It was Mark's annoying neighbour that yelled “Hey! What are you guys doing?”.

4. According to Thoran, it was the nature that was stunning; clear water stream, gushing over rocks with a slight gurgling sound. A fallen tree trunk about four feet in diameter lay down on one side of the river, leaning up against a tall tree. The tree trunk was slanted, with its highest point about fifteen feet in the air. The tree was covered in graffiti and carvings, as were most of the skinny trees around it. The air smelled fresh of moss and leaves, which were the color of fire, a golden red with a slight tinge of yellow.

5. Answer the question in your own words as there is no marking scheme for this type of question.
